Brooklands Road Test Portfolio

The Brooklands Road Test Portfolio series makes a welcome return with these two new volumes. They comprise comment by experts from five countries on (1) the MM and Series II models built between 1948 and 1956, and (2) the Minor 1000 models built until 1971. All variants are covered with new model introductions, updated specifications, road tests, service data, owners' reports etc, together with new information and restoration and buyers' guides.

The articles have been reproduced from commercial magazines and other sources first published between 1948 and 2010. They emanate from all the major markets in which the Minor was sold — notably the USA and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and South Africa — and provide a fascinating insight into the attitudes and responses which the Minor met.

Some markets viewed the Minor as a city or secondary form of transportation and thus were not too concerned about the relatively lethargic performance when compared with their domestic vehicles. However, without exception, all markets praised the road-holding and stability which more than compensated for the relatively poor performance prior to the 1956/7 model.

A unique aspect of these Brooklands anthologies is the inclusion of ordinary owners' recollections of Minor-related exploits. These include long-distance journeys, motor sport participation, performance modifications — the list is endless. One American family even relocated from California to Florida in their 1951 sidevalve, with two children under three and a large dog. You need to read their story for the full flavour and be jealous over a fuel bill of $30!

These volumes chronicle the period, over seven decades, when the Minor evolved from a highly sought-after modern newcomer, through a respectable but slightly dowdy middle-age, to its position today as a cornerstone of the British classic vehicle movement. They are highly recommended to all Minor enthusiasts.
