convertibles,original and non original

Hi
im a new member& new to morris minors who wishes to purchase a convertible but i note that there seem top be quite a few for sale that were originally salons. Could anyone advise on the acceptability of this practice from a general and more importantly safety aspect and what effect would be expected re valuatuon ? Looking forward to your replies

If done properly they are as safe as an original convertible. A few strengthening pieces should be added which replicate how the original convertible bodyshell was strengthened.

As for acceptibility - it's perfectly acceptable as long as you don't try to pass off a converted saloon as a genuine convertible. As for value - genuine will be worth more than converted if both are in the same condition.

Before i bought my genuine convertible i would've happily purcased a professionallly "converted" two door saloon if one had come along as it would've cost me a lot less than the genuine one i now have .It'l only be noticable as a "converted" two door saloon to the naked eye by people like me but i wouldn't criticise it as long as you don't pay over the odds for it and it's done professionally!

With the new EU regs planned it will probably be unuseable due to being modified from standard.

That has yet to be confirmed and my V5 clearly states 'convertible' though it is a post production conversion.

So are you saying that the DVLA will go back and check every record, for every convertible out there, not just Minors, to see if they are original or not?

I second that about the doom mongers even more so when they speak not from a position of knowledge but what they "think" or "expect" will happen.In reply to the first reply to the OP a conversion can actually be stronger than an original!A solid weld on thicker metal is far stronger than spot welds on thinner stuff.
